Prof Simon J. Draper FMedSci is Professor of Vaccinology and Translational Medicine in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Oxford. His lab is based in the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery in the Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Building. The group’s clinical team are based at the University’s Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine on the Old Road Campus. Prof Draper is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences; Director of the Basel-Oxford Centre for Translational Immune Engineering ("CTIE"); an Executive Committee member of the Malaria Vaccine Alliance ("MalVax"); and member of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine.
The Draper Lab study vaccine-induced immunity to malaria, with a particular focus on antibody immunology. Their research spans from preclinical vaccine design through to experimental medicine studies and Phase 2 clinical trials. In particular the group has pioneered novel vaccines for blood-stage Plasmodium falciparum malaria targeting the RH5 antigen and its wider PCRCR invasion complex. These are currently in Phase 1/2 clinical testing as next-generation multi-stage malaria vaccines in a programme of work that spans partnerships across East and West Africa. They have also pioneered advances in human challenge models for P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria, to help accelerate vaccine testing. The group also has a strong track record of training, capacity building, partnering with industry, and participation in numerous collaborative international programmes.
